I am also looking for an usable API thats available for more than one

DirectSound was removed from WM 5.0 and the waveOut API should be used.
WM 6.0 introduced a new Sound API. I assume WM 7.0 will be once more
totally different.

Not having Phonon, I would like to use the ActiveX Control for Windows
Media Player - however at least in TP2 it does not yet work.
