Purpose mailinglist
Message 1 in thread
Hi All,
I have forgotten the purpose of this mailinglist.
Is it to discuss:
- which compiler is the fastest one
- the very nice weather in the Netherlands
- the disadvantages of c++
- which IDE is the best
Or is it a helpdesk for users who refuse to read the excellent
documentation?
Regards

As we have a great mailinginst for discussion important issues in life,
I'd like to discuss meta transfers with you. In case you don't know what
meta transfer is, here is a short introduction:
While at uni we had a somewhat retired professor who, except for
educating us, also had a great interest in meta transfer. Really! He was
sure that we in the very near future would be able to transfer a person
from position A to virtually any position B, also intergalaxy. We would
just scan our bodies for meta information, transfer the information to a
receiving point, reconstruct the body, and thus be transferred. Great
stuff.
Would this not be a great idea for trolltech to develop further as you
already have a great meta object compiler. It would introduce Trolltech
to a completely new business segment, I'm sure.
Well it's just an idea....

There is more in life that "being serious".
I am sure at work you also (not allways but sometimes) make jokes and
try to have a bit of fun... and allmost every employer would accept that
since it helps employyees feel good and so leads to better results in
their 'serious' work.
Here the situation is similiar: we are hacking our code and thinking hard
about difficult issues for the largest part of the day: obviously this
results in "Need for Compensation" --> resulting in some funny mails on
this list.
I am sure (as long as such mails are not the majority of the list's content)
the list still is very usefull and - at least for me - there is no major
problem in skipping mails that I do not want to read.
Therefor I would like to ask you for a favor: Please try to stand with
some off-topic mails on this list! These mails just show that we (despite
our brain-oriented job) keep being human being and haven't converted into
roboters yet.
The same applies to your complaint about users not reading the docu before
posting here: This is just human behaviour!
Of course you are right: it is not the best way how to behave - in most
situations it surely would be more nice to read the documentation first - but
in my (not so humble) opinion it is not my or your job to ask these people
to stop behaving like this: The Qt-interest list does not show high traffic
(at least compared to some KDE developer's lists...) and so I am sure we can
live with some not really necessarry mails, don't you agree to me?
People asking thinks that /could/ have been found out by looking into the
documentation may be happy to receive a polite answer telling them about
the documentation _and_ telling them _where_ the facts they are asking for
are explained in the documentation.
Normally such people are happy to find out that the information is on
their desktop allready and most likely the next time they are facing such a
problem they will look into the docu first.
Don't you think we can stand such a little bit of OT-content here? :-)
Cheers,
Karl-Heinz
