Qt-interest Archive, March 2007
Archive email headers and spambots

Message 1 in thread

Hi,

This is not about the topic of this list but it concerns this list and
the subscribed users.

I started getting some spam emails after I joined this list and started
sending mails to the list. I've made a little research and figured out
why this is happening.

The list archive on lists.trolltech.com website is modifying emails'
header info and is changing entries from the form <name@xxxxxxxxxx> to
<name@xxxxxxxxxxx> which is expected. but there's actually a field that
is left intact which might contain the poster's email address. This
field is left in normal readable text which is perfect meat for spam bots.

Here's a random example page in the archive that shows what I'm talking
about, when you look at the page, try finding 'Old-return-path' in the
email header, you'll find more than one member's email address posted to
the public.

I could find more of these and now I'm sure I'm not the only one who
suffers from spam.

If there's anywhere I should send this email to Trolltech to be taken
care of, please tell me.

You could try

 http://www.trolltech.com/company/contact-info

and "Send some comment about the webpages" (which is the closest I could
find regarding this issue).

You have my vote that this should indeed be fixed, even though it's
probably way too late for my email - given the fact that my address is
also among those made public in the link you've just given :0

Cheers, Oliver

Hi,

This will probably be taken care of as soon as new mailing list software
is used for Trolltech's mailing lists. As far as I know this is already
in the pipe line.
