Changing mouse focus policy on the fly

Message 1 in thread

Is it possible to change the mouse focus policy in KDE or Gnome on the
fly within a Qt program?

The problem is this - I need to detect a keystroke while the middle mouse
button is depressed. This only seems to work when the mouse focus policy
is set to "Focus under mouse" or "Focus strictly under mouse", with the
former being the best. Is it possible to set this policy 'on the fly'? If not,
is there some setting that I can use within the program that would
allow me to simultaneously detect a keystroke while the mouse button is
pressed?
