Qt-interest Archive, February 2008
Official Qt 4.3 book now available

Message 1 in thread

I am pleased to announce that C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4, Second
Edition (ISBN-10 0132354160), by Jasmin Blanchette and myself is now
available.

This extended and revised second edition of the Official Qt book has
been thoroughly updated to take advantage of features introduced in Qt
versions 4.2 and 4.3, including QGraphicsView and QDialogButtonBox, and
features two new chapters and two new appendixes:

    * Look and Feel Customization (covers style sheets and QStyle)
    * Application Scripting (covers QtScript/ECMAScript)
    * Building Qt Applications (covers qmake, cmake, bjam, and scons)
    * Introduction to Qt Jambi

The original graphics chapter has been split into separate 2D and 3D
chapters, which between them now cover the new graphics view classes
and QPainter's OpenGL back-end. In addition, much new material has
been added to the Database, XML, and Embedded Programming (Qtopia)
chapters.

This new edition is 180 pages longer that the previous one, and is
available in hardcover. It is already possible to order it from Amazon.

From the preface:

This edition, like its predecessors, emphasizes explaining Qt
programming and providing realistic examples, rather than simply
rehashing or summarizing Qt's extensive online documentation.
Because the book teaches solid Qt 4 programming principles and
practices, readers will easily be able to learn the new Qt modules
that come out in Qt 4.4, Qt 4.5, and later Qt 4.x versions.

Available now from:
http://www.informit.com/title/0132354160
This page also has a link to the online sample chapter (2D Graphics).

It should be available from Amazon and other bookstores in the next week
or so in North America.

As a teacher, first edition owner and Qt fan, may I ask if the first version
will become available digitally? It could probe to be a great teaching
tool :-)

Will it be made E-books as the previous edition? I would like to buy it
for a little cheaper and convenient.
In our country, these books will be seen in the market after 3 months at
least. As so far, there's just Qt3 books we can buy.

I've asked the publisher (1) when a PDF of the first edition will become
available, and (2) to confirm that the second edition will be available
for sale in electronic form---although I'm pretty sure it will be. I
will let you know once I hear back (which may not be soon!).

I'm still waiting to hear about that, but hopefully by the summer.

Is there an "upgrade option" for folks like me who purchased the first edition ?

Not that I know of!

If you've read the first edition you should have a good grasp on the Qt
way of programming so you should be in a good position to learn the new
stuff directly from the documentation. Also, the new and revised
examples will be available online soon. The only compelling reason to
buy the second edition if you have the first is if you really want one
of the new chapters---apart from 2D Graphics which you can read
online---but even then you could start with the examples and maybe
they'd be sufficient:-)
