First time trying out Qt Jambi - some issues
Message 1 in thread
Hi there. I just wanted to give some feedback on my first time trying
out and fiddling with Qt Jambi today (on a Windows XP SP2 system):
First, the install process: or rather the lack thereof. A nice exe
installer that sets all the path and other environmental variables for
you would go a long way toward making the end user (aka me ;) ) happy
and eager to jump into the new programming experience. Another nice
touch would be detecting the presence of Eclipse and giving the user the
option to install the Eclipse plugin during installation. As it was, I
had a bit of trouble finding said plugin on the Trolltech website, since
it was on the same page as the regular Qt Eclipse plugin and the link
was simply labeled "Qt Jambi (Java)". It's also not clear to me whether
the Qt Jambi plugin requires MinGW to be installed--I already had it
installed anyway, but again, a good exe-based installer could download
and install it if needed and prevent the end-user from having to do all
of this guesswork.
Second: I found out the hard way that the Qt Jambi Eclipse plugin cannot
be installed simultaneously with the C++ Qt Eclipse plugin. Or rather,
it can be installed, it just won't work--it crashed every time I tried
to switch to the Qt Designer UI Perspective and gave errors whenever I
tried to open any of the Qt views. In fact, not until I completely
uninstalled my entire C++ Qt 4 installation (short of MinGW), removed
all of the Qt and Qt Jambi environmental variables from my Windows
System Properties, deleted all of the Qt and Qt Jambi Eclipse plugin
files and then reinstalled the Jambi plugin did I finally get the Qt
Jambi Eclipse integration to function properly. It seems strange to me
that C++ Qt and Qt Jambi can't be installed on the same system, since I
would think there might be some Qt programmers wanting to get their feet
wet with Java or vice-versa, but there it is.
One other minor bug: the webstart/qtjambi.exe demo crashes every time I
try to open the "Application" demo with Motif, CDE, or Plastique themes.
There may be other demos that crash with these themes, too; I didn't
test them all. If you'd like I can post the error logs. :)
Anyway, that was it for the criticism. After a few hours of trying to
get things working, I'm happy to finally be able to start testing things
out! Thank you very much for putting out this product; I look forward to
happily hacking around with it! And realize even though I sound
critical, I just want to help you improve things for the future!
Cheers

Hi, Michael.
First of all, thank you very much for the long and detailed report.

Yes, that's a very good suggestion and it has been noted.

The Qt Jambi plugin does not require MinGW. The reason "mingw" is the
specification of one of the packages is that it is meant to be used
together with the binary GPL package of Qt Jambi, which is built against
mingw's libraries. I see how this can be confusing. I'm sure it's
intended mainly as technical information. For Qt Jambi 4.4, the
structure of our packages should be altered significantly, so hopefully
this confusion will go away at that point.

Yes, we apologize for this. The reason it does not currently work is due
to technical issues that unfortunately make it impossible to achieve. We
are, however, working on solutions for the problem, and hope they'll be
able to play side-by-side in the future.

Thank you, but no need, as I can reproduce this here =)
It should be fixed in Qt Jambi 4.3.3 which is out soon.

Thank you for your fast, informative and friendly reply! It's great that
there are such nice, helpful people developing this project!

Sorry to post this to the list but I unsubscribed twice through
qt-jambi-interest-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx and yes, have sent the confirmation
code back to the server. I still keep receiving messages. Can you guys
please get me off of the list?
Thanks,
