...works find on linux (openSUSE 10.2 x86_64) the shotcuts still work though you can easily reconstruct this by creating a QMainWindow in the designer, adding an action to the menubar and preview the form

This is a "feature" of XP. Pressing Alt will cause the underline to appear. I
believe there is a setting somewhere in XP to turn this off, too.

If my memory serves right, right click on Desktop,
Settings->Appearance->Advanced effects button and its in one of the 5 or
so checkboxes in the modal dialog that comes up :)
