New Assistant Suggestions

Message 1 in thread

I'm not sure if this is the correct venue, but here are some suggestions I
have after using the new assistant. Several of the suggestions involve
reverting to some functionality that was in the old assistant. Though it may
seem like nostalgia, I'm a brand new Qt user, so these suggestions are based
solely on usability and not on old habits.

1. The search window is awkward as a tab in the main window and there seems
to be no benefit to it being there. It does not lose any functionality when
it is resized to the size of the sidebar. It would be better for usability
for the search to be a module like the bookmarks and TOC.

2. In the TOC, a double click has two functions: expand a node in the tree
and open a page in the main window. For usability, the old assistant
behavior seems preferable - single click to open a topic and double click to
expand a node.

3. Adding and removing bookmarks must be done through a right click, menu
option, or keyboard shortcut, none of which are immediately obvious. The old
assistant has two push buttons - one to add and one to remove - in the
sidebar itself. Again, the old assistant behavior seems preferable.

4. When performing a search, the results show the topic and the url. While
there may be times when knowing the url is helpful (I can't think of any),
in standard help applications it gives the user no useful information and,
instead, adds clutter to the window. It would be nice to have the option to
disable this feature.

5. When using keywords for an index, it would be very useful to be able to
add nested keywords much like nested topics in the TOC. This would greatly
improve the organization of the index, allowing it to function as a standard
index rather than a list of keywords.

Thanks for your consideration.

See 4.

This has been fixed.

Fixed as well.

We'll definitely consider this. Either we keep in in the tab mode as we
have it now and add some more information (text parts of the document)
to every hit or we'll move everything back into a dock widget.

Nested keywords are not supported right now. If you have a rather small
number of indices then it might give you some benefits, but the benefits
when having a large number of indices are rather limited.

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Hi Thomas,

One more suggestion for the new assistant: The proxy configuration in
assistant lacks support for authorization, i.e. there is no way to enter
username and password used for proxy access.
