Re: Concince me to buy you a Greenphone

Message 1 in thread

Hi there,

Apologies if this thread has long since expired. I have only just stumbled
upon it while researching the Greenphone, and I would love to start
exploring this platform. Finding a sponsor would make this possible.

First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Jack Healy, and I develop
and run the free anti-spam service www.mailexpire.com. This is a service
whereby you can generate temporary email aliases for use when you need to
fill in a contact emailer in a form, but don't want to risk getting tons of
unwanted mail. This started off as a private solution for my own needs,
which I made available to the public in 1999. I do have some sponsorship
for this service, but it doesn't cover the full cost, and I have regular
monthly expenses just to keep the service running.

I am currently looking at making some changes to mailexpire. I have been
doing some work recently on scalability and stability, and while there is
more to do, I would now like to look at developing a public API for the
service so that users can write their own clients to manage their aliases.

Personally, I would like to develop one for the Greenphone. This would
allow anyone with a Greenphone to generate/manage aliases without requiring
access to a PC. Some of this can currently be done using the web browser on
most handsets, but it's not really ideal, and I would like to do this
properly using a custom client.

So what use would this be? Whenever you bump into a marketing campaign (at
a conference, on the street in a store, wherever) and your email address is
requested in return for something of interest to you (a free gadget,
documentation, money-off coupons, competition entry, whatever), you could
just get out your Greenphone, run the mailexpire client, generate a new
email alias and hand it over in return for whatever it was you wanted, happy
in the knowledge that you can cancel the alias whenever you like, and won't
be at the mercy of whoever you gave it to.

If you decide to sponsor this initiative, you won't just be supporting a new
Greenphone application, but you will also be helping to expand an existing
free service which is already helping people to keep their inboxes spamfree.

I am more than happy to answer any further questions on this.

Thanks for your time and again, apologies if I've missed the boat.

Regards,

Jack Healy
