USB network disconnects often

Hello,
As far as I can tell, at least several people besides me [like John
Lombardo from LinuxDevices.com] have been experiencing the problem of
regular disconnects and connection failures [we're talking USB here].
And as far as I can tell from the error messages, which advise to plug
out and back in [or to remove/replace the battery] and try again, this
is a problem known to Trolltech. Can you tell me what is the cause of
such ill behaviour, and if is of hardware or software origin? Thanks,
